The First Church Adult Education Committee and the Diversity Team are sponsoring a screening of 13th an American documentary by director Ava DuVernay (Selma) on Wednesday, February 22 at 7 pm in Loper Chapel.
Centered on race in the United States criminal justice system, the film is titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which outlawed slavery (unless as punishment for a crime). DuVernay's documentary argues that slavery is being effectively perpetuated through mass incarceration.
The film has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audience members and has been nominated for and won several awards.
An opportunity for discussion and conversation will follow the screening.
